Insurance AFEA

The AFEA received an offer from his insurance broker (ASEQ).

The offer is this: the insurer AFEA (Sun Life) offers $ 35,000 to AFEA via ASEQ (as intercessor) in exchange for a formal commitment on the part of AFEA to contiue to use the services of ASEQ 2020 (this contract between the two parties ended in 2012). The full amount may be used by AFEA as it sees fit, however AFEA must commit to ten years with ASEQ before December 31, 2010, otherwise the deal falls through.

Unable to hold a general meeting at such short periods, the Executive AFEA wanted to check with its modular organizations (including AECSEL) their opinion on the issue. The Executive Committee has therefore AECSEL talks on the issue. The

AECSEL pronounce very timidly for a commitment from AFEA ASEQ for eight years, so that AFEA get their hands on the amount of $ 35,000 offered to him. So, our executive is largely in favor of the transaction.

However, we have a number of concerns including we would like to share with the exec. of AFEA to take it into account in its deliberations. They are:

1) Although the practice seems common, as stated by the representative of EHAQ, it seems most problematic from an ethical standpoint, to receive an amount of $ 35,000 in exchange for loyalty We vow that anyway ASEQ seems supsicieux, why do not we offer a discount to the same amount, instead? And why the rush to settle the matter so quickly? There is something fishy, and eel book, probably. Merrily we involved in a fraud?

2) The AECSEL surprised at this seemingly benevolent approach from its insurer (SunLife) and its insurance broker (ASEQ); money rarely falls from the sky that way sooner or later, AFEA will probably end up paying one way or another the amount awarded to him for free now, or more.

3) In truth, Exec. AECSEL of (and perhaps also that of AFEA) feels caught in the throat by ASEQ in this matter; is what often happens in cases of monopoly and it is certainly something to frame level of student insurance in Quebec, will we cost? if we refuse the amount (For ethical reasons), we sacrifice a considerable sum that could be assigned to our defense in any wrongdoing by the insurance industry in Quebec (price increases, service cuts already low lark) .

4) Other major assos have cheerfully accepted the manna, what kind of risk we take to put your hand? This risk is it more than not there to hand? We are not equipped to judge.

5) The legality of this transaction seems at least on bail; can we trust what ASEQ in its empresa, we offer as collateral?

6) By accepting a generous sum of money now in exchange for a commitment to long term, we may be trying to take advantage today of the misfortunes of those who follow us to AFEA in seven ten years, which will have to live with our decision without either power.

is the essence of our concerns.

solidarity,
Sebastian Roldan
President AECSEL

Here's the message SETU:

the end of this session, bills of correcting students finish, while the copies, they continue to pile up. Many corrective and remedial us regularly by systematically exceeded those of contract. Several reasons: the contracts are regularly dumped, the department refuses to extend contracts, budgets are cut teaching assistants, and they and they dare not ask for an extension (sometimes accusing, to wrongly, of being too slow-e), or even their supervisor that refusal to complete the corrections. And so many of us will do volunteer work, strengthening our increasingly precarious.

So we decided to fight against this practice. Part of our strategy is to sensitize student associations: we can meet your Executive, or your meeting, you explain in more detail the problem and especially the actions that students and student employees have at their disposal (change form (or revaluation) of the contract collective complaint, etc..) volunteering to fight against. Meet you, it would also enable us to realize the special situation in each department.

other hand, we are launching a survey to assess the magnitude of hours by our members bénéVolées corrective and remedial (see attachment). Thank you kindly distribute it to your members.

We await your news
